100 years in business! Buehler Companies is celebrating 100 years this year in the moving and storage business. It’s pretty amazing to be able to say that. From moving people in 1912 back and forth to the airport when the great gold rush began, to today. We are glad to be able to tell everyone that even now, we believe in a good quality move at a reasonable price. We have gone through our ups and downs with the economy, but still have pulled through fast and strong. Buehler Companies is very proud of our team and all of the effort that they have exerted to making Buehler one of the most successful moving businesses in Colorado. Benefits of LTL Service

When you first opened up for business, you could easily get away with using the post office, or one of the parcel carrier services for your shipping needs. Now that your business has grown, it is time for your means of freight shipping to do the same. This means that you need to start taking a look at the benefits of using a logistics service.

When you have grown your business to ship large orders from your warehouse or production facility, but aren’t yet (or have no plans to start…) running your own truck division to freight your product to your customers distribution facilities around the country, you will be faced with many options from many sources.

Buehler logistics has a variety of suggestions to help your company control its freight costs. From handling your warehousing, order fulfillment and shipping, as well as utilizing carrier partners that offer expedited, truckload or less than truck load services.

Whenever you are dealing with any type of freight shipping, there are going to be two terms that you hear a great deal. FTL and LTL. FTL stands for full truck load. This term is used when you have enough of one shipment to fill an entire trailer, or close enough to it. It doesn’t always mean that you have enough “pieces” or “boxes” to fill up a truck; it can also be used to describe the weight of the shipment. Most shipments weighing over 20,000 pounds are usually described as being a full truck load (FTL) shipment. This also means that you have enough product or weight to completely hire it from the trucking company with no other product from other companies on it. LTL or Less than Truckload is the shipping option that most small to medium sized manufacturers use. This term is used when you “rent” or “occupy” only a small portion of an entire truckload, with the remainder of the trailer divvied up amongst other companies who are shipping to a destination located close to where your shipment is going. LTL shipments are usually made up of 20,000 pounds and under or 10 pallets or less.

There are many advantages to shipping LTL. The biggest advantage is the savings it can bring to your company and your customers. Because you only have a portion of the trailer, and because the trucking company will make more money on the entire truck, the trucking company can afford to reduce the overall costs for each company shipping on the truck. The only advantage of utilizing Full Truckload service versus Less than Truckload service is if you have a very specialized order, requiring guaranteed delivery times, white glove handling or zero hour expediting. This way you have control over the entire truck, because you have purchased the entire truck.

Buehler Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Buehler’s house

not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The boxes were stacked in the warehouse with care,

In hopes that the delivery truck, soon would be there;

The vaults were all loaded and snug into place,

and a forklift was moving a pallet with grace;

A driver stood tall, securing a strap,

While the dispatcher inside, was printing a map.

When out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter,

Stuart sprang from his office to see what was the matter.

Away to the window, he flew like a flash,

tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

There were tire tracks on the breast of the new-fallen snow

They gave luster of mid-day to the movers below,

When, what to his wondering eyes should appear,

but a semi tractor trailer carrying eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

he knew in that moment that it must be St. Nick.

All proud of his class A License, he sang

and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the mountains! To the top of the wall!

This tractor trailer can carry it all!

Local, Interstate or however we fly,

Taking a truck is easier than using the sky!”

So driving to Buehler, the semi they used,

With a truck full of toys, reindeer and St. Nicolas too.

And then, in a twinkling, Stuart heard on the road,

tires squealing and spinning as the great big truck slowed.

As he drew in his head and was turning around,

Into the front doors of Buehler, St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in blue, from his head to his heel.

And his uniform stated “Buehler Companies” for real!

A bundle of cartons he carried in on his back,

And he looked like a mover without his red sack.

His eyes – how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pen he held in his teeth really tight,

As he handed out papers “Please sign here on the right”

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

that shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And Stuart laughed when he saw him, in spite of himself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave Stuart to know that he had no claims to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

and he unloaded that trailer, then turned with a jerk,

and placing his finger to tap the side of his head,

he shook Stuarts hand “thanks for the truck” he said

He sprang to his semi, his team asleep in the rear,

he pressed on the gas and they woke up with fear.

But we heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight…

A Historic Move: By The Numbers

Approximately 30 contract workers and 50 volunteers assisted History Colorado staff in packing and transporting millions of artifacts, photographs, and printed materials to temporary storage, including:

* 195 truckloads containing 1,580 pallets, 279 crates, and 126 oversize boxes holding framed painting and other large items;

* 5 very large objects such as a sod house and Fritchle automobile, moved by special conveyances;

* Approximately 4 tons of books and more than 1.5 miles of manuscript collections.

Buehler Moving & Storage assisted Trammell Crow Company in coordinating and accomplishing the collections and History Colorado office moves. Buehler provided:

* 4 to 30 movers per day, with an average of 8 to 12 movers for more than 70 days - equal to 626 supervisor hours, 3,677 mover hours, and 947 truck hours;

* Flatbeds, cranes, rigging, crating, packing, dismantling, demolition, reinstalling, re-shelving, and other equipment and services;

* 630 tapeless cartons, 8 cases of shrink-wrap, 150 computer bags, 16 dish packs, 60 library carts, 56 machine carts, 10,000 sticker labels, 130 custom-built pallets, 47 "speed packs", 100 miscellaneous boxes, and 880 plastic moving totes.

Day One of Dam Project - Windbreaks

Today, November 9, the Brachfeld Corp. began construction of the first of several state-of-the-art dams for the Meadowlark Cooperative with a donation of scrapwood from Buehler & Mayflower for use as a windbreak. The windbreak, when completed, will help direct the accumulation of snow for use in the cultivation of native trees producing food, medicine and fuel, as well as in ecological reclamation efforts. The dam is employing nearly 100% recycled materials.

We are pleased to announce the United Mayflower Container Services Dealer of the Quarter for the third quarter! This program recognizes UMC dealers who provide outstanding service to all of our customers while working to drive the highest possible sales levels!

A dealer must own a minimum of 30 containers and be at or above the UMC network average on six qualifying criteria for the quarter to qualify as a candidate for dealer of the quarter. These requirements focus either on improving customer service or on driving sales and are listed below:
1. Customer satisfaction score
2. Container utilization percentage
3. Percentage of orders with a source of “saw container”
4. Percentage of orders that are “dealer generated”
5. Percentage of ETAs assigned on time
6. Percentage of tasks marked complete on time

Final determination of the UMC Dealer of the Quarter from the pool of qualifying dealers is based upon assessment of several additional criteria.

In today’s world, as we look toward the changing role of the supply chain as a whole, we must look toward one common identifier, Sustainability. As technology moves forward and world markets change, globalization, risk mitigation, volatile oil prices and sustainability pressures change the landscape of logistics.
As the supply chain has gotten more complex and transportation more expensive as a whole, not to mention the ever raising prices of fuel and maintenance, shippers are paying more attention to their transportation options as a differentiating factor. Manufacturers and Suppliers have to keep products moving, at a lower cost. Customers are no longer stockpiling inventory, making it an “on-demand” marketplace.
Shippers and manufacturers are increasingly deciding that transportation isn’t their core-competence and that they’re going to outsource that function, typically to one or more third-party logistics providers
Many shippers are turning to third-party logistics providers (3PLs) for managed services. While this may seem to impose the extra costs of a middleman, many shippers find numerous advantages to outsourcing this function.
First, 3PLs often have enough buying power to leverage lower rates from carriers, and can pass along a portion of those savings to shippers. Another advantage to a 3PL managed approach is the ability to enhance carrier efficiency by combining round-trip freight. Shippers who deal directly with carriers routinely have to pay round-trip rates, because once the carrier gets the goods from Point A to Point B, it has to make a deadhead return trip with empty vehicles. Carriers must factor this unproductive time into their pricing.
3PLs can often match carriers with return shipments, sparing shippers round-trip rates. In addition, carriers can charge less for each leg of the trip, because they can proportionately distribute their increased costs across multiple shippers in one shipment.

At the Closing General Session of the Learning Conference, I announced two major public relations campaigns planned for United and Mayflower prior to peak season. On March 13, at 9:00 p.m. EDT/8:00 p.m. CDT, United will be featured in an episode of the reality show Undercover Boss on CBS, and beginning in April, we are launching a national media campaign to educate the public about how to avoid moving fraud, with Mayflower as the face of trusted, reputable movers. I believe that both of these opportunities will help improve our already strong brand recognition and drive business opportunities to the agency family during the summer season and beyond.

In December, I visited United agencies and performed a variety of jobs undercover. Until the show airs, I can’t say exactly what happened during my time undercover, but I can tell you it was an enlightening experience for me to work side-by-side with our dedicated, frontline teams. I’m thrilled to share with the country what I already knew about you, our agents. You are the moving experts, who continually go the extra mile for their customers.

My primary reasons for going undercover were to learn more about the company and the dedicated men and women who work on the front lines, and I will be implementing some new programs internally as a result of what I learned. We have also hired a public relations team to help us maximize the unique opportunity that Undercover Boss presents and create goodwill with the general public. We will be doing media tours, social media campaigns and customer outreach.

For Mayflower, we are hiring a spokesperson to educate consumers about the dangers of moving fraud. With the help of an outside public relations firm and a spokesperson, we will give consumers the information they need to choose a reputable mover. We will be seeking opportunities to showcase Mayflower in national and local markets. Mayflower will be the sponsor of this campaign, which will give us an opportunity to show that Mayflower is the careful mover that consumers know and can trust. Again, we will leverage the goodwill created by this campaign to create new leads and opportunities, for you, our agents.

I hope all of you will agree that participating in Undercover Boss and conducting an extensive public relations campaign featuring Mayflower as the authority on safe and reliable moving are both exciting opportunities for UniGroup and our agency family. Remembering Nine-Eleven

Buehler Companies takes a moment of silence to remember the hero’s and victims of the Nine-Eleven (9/11) attacks this Patriot Day. In memory of the 2,993 people killed in New York Cities Twin Towers.

This is a day where Buehler will fly the American flag at half-staff and observe a moment of silence beginning at 6:46 am MST which is the time that the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Both buildings collapsed within two hours.

The victims, the firefighters and those that have risked their own lives to save others will be remembered and honored. Please take the time to remember those we have lost this Patriot Day.

6 WEEKS BEFORE MOVE OUT DAY

Create a “move information” file to keep important papers and receipts organized.
Review IRS pub. 521 to learn more about deductible expenses... irs.gov
Contact your insurance agent to transfer policies for auto, home, etc.
Arrange for medical, dental, eye, and prescriptions records to be forwarded.
Decide what valuables to take with you: certificates, jewelry, photo albums, software, etc.
Make travel arrangements as needed. Be flexible when possible!
Arrange to forward your mail (go to USPS site)
Plan where furniture might go in new residence.
Contact your local Mayflower agent for an in-home, no cost survey.

4-5 WEEKS BEFORE

Weight costs money. Start sorting closets, basements, garages.
Plan meals that use up frozen and pantry food. Spices ship well.
Decide whether to have a garage sale or give things to charity.
Let children get involved with some sorting, easy packing, and planning their new room.
Let us help you with the difficult packing, even if you are doing some of your own.
Keep us informed of any major changes in your survey list.

3 WEEKS BEFORE

For young children, arrange for a baby sitter to take them to another household.
Make arrangements to move your extra cars, if they go.
Return library books, videos and any other borrowed items.
Arrange to give away live plants, they cannot be stored or shipped.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Sort and set aside non-allowable items such as paint, aerosols, bleach, BBQ tanks, ammo, etc.
Decide on payment arrangements with your mover. Mayflower accepts four major cards.
Have your car(s) serviced for the trip if driving.
Spend time with friends before leaving. Have a little fun before saying goodbye.
Upholstered furniture should not be cleaned before moving or storing; moisture from cleaning can be trapped under stretch wrap or plastic covers.

1 WEEK BEFORE

Start marking the items that do not go; we have stickers for this purpose.
Arrange for termination date for utilities.
VERY IMPORTANT: separate and luggage pack ‘survival’ belongings that go with you on the trip: money, Credit Cards, passports, checkbooks, good jewelry, etc.
Be sure to give your Mayflower agent all of the phone numbers and emails you can; the more the better. You will also be given your driver’s cell number.
All Mayflower drivers are required to have a smart phone. Most also have in-cab world-wide GPS service.

LOADING DAY

Be at home to meet the packers and the driver. Show the crew your entire home, pointing out any items not going.
Be there during packing and loading to answer questions.
It is your responsibility to see that all of your goods are loaded and that nothing is left behind.

MOVE-IN DAY

Be there when drive arrives.
Be sure to check off all inventory numbers and condition as goods are brought in.
Know where to have each heavy item placed in new home as it comes off the truck.
Your mover is not obligated to rearrange your furniture.
Your driver will remove any empty cartons you unpack before he leaves your home.

AFTER THE MOVE

Follow up with your agent; let them know how your move went

One in three people will contract Cancer, and one in four people will die from the disease. In the recent months, two of our valuable clients and friends have been diagnosed with different forms of Cancer.

Our friends are not the only people in the world that are struggling with the fight of Cancer. There are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and grandparents and even the families that suffer alongside them. They are people that we love and care about and people that we support in the fight. Cancer affects everyone.

Round Robin is a logistical way of moving your office on a continuous basis. This ensures timeliness on your move if you have multiple truckloads worth of product. Crews simultaneously load at origin while crews are unloading and placing product at the same time at destination. Who knew it all began with horses!

CORPORATE HISTORY

Established in 1912, Bill and Erv Buehler hitched a horse to a wagon and went into the moving business. They called their firm Buehler Transfer Co. The early days consisted mostly of hauling trunks between Denver hotels and the train station. As the country moved west, people began moving and Buehler began to prosper into the 1920’s.

The company went from horse carts to trucks and from moving trunks to moving furniture. In January 1947, the Robins brothers purchased Buehler from its founders. By then, they had 6 large trucks and one moving van trailer along with five employees. By the 1940’s, Buehler was a well established enterprise.

In 1972, Art and John Robbins purchased the company from their fathers. The brothers ran the business together until 1982 when Art Robbins became the sole owner of the company.

Stuart Smith took over the company in 1994 and under his leadership; we continue to build on the philosophy of providing a complete move management process for corporate, international, state to state and local moves to this day.

Approximately 13,825 square feet, four bedrooms, large great room, game room, two private offices, library, fitness room, 1,500 bottle wine cellar, mud room, oversized two car garage and seven fireplaces. The ranch is valued at $88 million dollars. It’s was on 3,100 acres of prime land with guest cabins and lodges, not to mention the 12,000 square foot spa and aquatic center.

Buehler Companies Manitou Express and Mountain View Moving in Colorado Springs not only moved all of this in 4 feet worth of snow, but they also managed to move all of the wine and major artifacts in climate controlled and properly managed the entire move without any problems. The plants, a very large terrarium and the buffalo hide make this one of the most valuable relocations.

Buehler Companies will issue an initial project management report to all involved parties for the duration of the project. Quality control will be provided and measured ultimately by you the customer! We would like your feedback. Based upon your feedback, Buehler will make corrective actions to accommodate your concerns.

Buehler Companies corporate quality control process includes multiple levels of detailed supervision and training of personnel to ensure buildings and moved items are handled with the utmost care and professionalism.

An employee move package will be made available via the Buehler Companies Move Management Team. This package outlines procedures i.e. packing/labeling, plus any additional instructions deemed necessary.

A pre-inspection walk-through with building management will be performed before each phase of the project, and any previous damage noted.

It’s moving to a new building, called the History Colorado Center, one block south of its current 13th and Broadway location in Denver. But since the new museum won’t open until 2012, millions of pieces of Colorado history must be moved to warehouses in the interim. Each piece was hand packed into boxes and crates with extreme care. Everything from ancient Native American pottery to President Eisenhower’s military uniform.

The History Colorado Center will provide a place where learning about our past can help us imagine our future, and will feature more exhibit space, more educational programs and more chances for visitors to learn the stories of the people who shaped this state. Segments of

Founded in 1879, History Colorado, the Colorado Historical Society brings the unique character of Colorado's past to more than a million people each year through historical museums and highway markers, exhibitions, manuscript and photograph collections, popular and scholarly publications, historical and archaeological preservation services, and educational programs for children and adults.

Museums and Historic Sites
History Colorado operates twelve historic sites and museums in 10 locations around the state, including the Colorado History Museum in Denver.

One of the most recent accomplishments is the movement of a 2700 pound buffalo made of solid bronze and has a value of $155,000.00. This is one small part of one of the highest valued relocations in Denver, Colorado.

The amazing sculpture was crafted by T.D. Kelsey, a world renowned artist whose work is found in private and public collections worldwide. This incredible piece of work labeled “On the Wind” is one of the Colorado Historical Societies most priced pieces and they needed the right moving company with the right experience to handle the job!

The Supreme Court and the Colorado Court of Appeals are now in session after moving a few blocks to The Denver Post building over the weekend and Monday.
The courts' move began Friday from 2 E. 14th Avenue as work begins on the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Complex.

The move was completed without any problems, and the courts are open for business, said Rob McCallum, spokesman for the Colorado Judicial Branch.

"Over the course of the weekend, we got everything on the eighth floor, and people are still unpacking today," he said. "Everything was very smooth, and there were a lot of smiles from the judges, and they will be taking the bench in short order."

The courtroom is on the ground floor of The Post building at 101 W. Colfax Ave. and seats 35 people. The secured entrance is off Broadway near Cheyenne Place.

The Supreme Court library also is located on the ground floor, and the public can enter through the main lobby.

Clerks' offices are on the eighth floor of the building.
The Colorado Court of Appeals is set to hear oral arguments on April 27.

McCallum said the new courtroom may only seat 35 people but if there is a case in which a larger crowd is anticipated, court staff may decide to hold the session in a room at the Colorado State Capitol.

The judges and justices will hear cases in the building until the new judicial complex opens in 2013.

Packing & Relocating Artwork

All artwork, mirrors, marble tops, glass tops, pictures, oil paintings, etc… should be packed into mirror or picture boxes, unless they are very small. Smaller items may be packed into dish pack boxes on the top edge.

The materials you will need:
Tape
Blank newsprint paper or bubble wrap
Mirror (picture boxes)

Framed Art Work & Prints

Prepare a mirror carton for the artwork by putting wadded newsprint paper on the bottom of the box. Do not close the top end of the box.
Wrap each individual artwork or print with newsprint or wrap them in bubble wrap.
Put the item in the box and if they fit loosely in the box, fill in the spaces with lightly wadded newsprint paper.
Tape the boxes shut and use a marker to write "Fragile-Art Work" onto it.

Glass Table Tops and Marble Tops

Prepare a mirror carton for the glass or marble top by putting wadded newsprint paper on the bottom of the box and into the corners.
Wrap each individual glass or marble top with newsprint or wrap them in bubble wrap.
Put the glass or marble top in the box and if they fit loosely in the box, fill in the spaces with newsprint paper. If two boxes are needed for the glass top, then put the second box on top of the other overlaying them together and fill spaces with newsprint paper.

Mirrors

Place tape across the front of the mirror like an X to keep the pieces in place in case the glass cracks or breaks.
Prepare a mirror carton for the mirror by putting newsprint paper on the bottom of the box and in the corners.
Wrap each individual mirror with newsprint or wrap them in bubble wrap.
Put the mirror(s) in the box and if they fit loosely in the box, fill in the spaces with newsprint paper.

Paintings

If your painting is framed with glass put masking tape across the front of the painting like an X to keep the pieces in place in case the glass cracks or breaks.
Cover the framed painting(s) or canvas with bubble wrap and tape them closed.If you are packing a painting with glass, then put the painting in a mirror carton and fill in the spaces with newsprint paper. If you are packing a canvas painting (no frame, no glass), wrap the box in bubble wrap again, tape it, then build a second box for

So I have been doing a lot of Social Networking trying to sink my brain into it to see what all the hype is about. I have been on Facebook and Twitter and realized that it's actually pretty fun. I am having a blast reading other peoples Tweets and learning a lot about the world, trending topics and how Social Networking can actually impact your business.

My thoughts are fairly simple. It's not all about annoying people with sales and shoving commercials in the form of 140 characters or less into their face all day. I think it's about people who like what you have to say as a person. They are interested in you because you are a human that dosen't bore them and spam their inbox with junk they could care less about.

Thinking up new ways of doing business is the key to success! Thinking outside of the business box is going to get you a lot further in any industry.

For example, I called a company in another state asking for recycling of computers and they said “we don’t do that” and it got me thinking… Why not? I got onto Google (my best friend) and found a place in their area that recycles computers and told them to take them there. It was simple and I saved our company money because they didn’t hire the company themselves and add a bit of commission on top. If only they had said “Hey we can do that for you!” they could have boosted up the job a little more and made a little profit.

A key element to making money is saying “”Yes we can help you!” despite if it is something that is outside of the box of moving.

I will be glad to help you! I can take care of anything you need! Make it happen because if you don’t know how to do something, Google will tell you.

It’s hard enough knowing that business is down in any industry. It’s a tough economy for all companies. People are already in fear of loosing their jobs all over the United States. Moral is extremely important in these times where not only are companies struggling, but the people who run them as well.

When someone steps up to the plate and works with all their might to bring in extra business or goes the extra mile even when times are down, remember that even though it won’t change the entire economy or situation of the company, it is still “good enough”.

Telling people that it is not good enough all the time makes them start to give up. Keep your moral high and people will keep trying to bring in all they can to help.

Let’s talk about what makes you a good person to work with. It’s not that you come in everyday to do your job… anyone can do that. So what makes you so special? Do you go out of your way to help people? Or are you one of those people that have a tendency to say to people “It’s not my job” on a daily basis?

You may not think it matters, but it does. It actually makes a difference if you go out of your way to help someone. The most memorable and admirable people that I work with are not the people that say “This can’t be done” or “That’s not my job” but rather, it’s the people that say “I am not sure how to do that, but heck I will give it a shot and see what I find out!”

People who actually want to help and show it are respected above others and people who actually try to learn and try to figure things out are the best employees. It’s not about what we can’t do or don’t have time for. It’s about working to making things happen.

So you think you have it rough? You come into work everyday and you bust your tail to get your job done with a smile on your face. Are you appreciated? I think that it is so important to show the people you work with that you truly appreciate them for what they do.

Everyone has a different function in most industries and all of those functions are pretty darn important. We all have a purpose. You may think that some people do less than you, but do you really know what they do? You probably don’t understand half of their job function so it is easy to assume that they only do the specific things that you know they do.

Whoa that was a tongue twister!

I guess what I am saying is that if you are judging someone else… take the time to learn about what they do and get to know them as a person. You may find that they actually do more than you think. I have found that once I have learned what others actually do around here, I admire and respect them more.

The Whole Company is Customer Service.

If you are a billing clerk or you are a receptionist.... whatever it is that you do, if you have any contact with a customer then you are now customer service. Not only are you now customer service, but you are now sales. Why is it important to the company that you know this?

Well it may not be in your job description to actually do customer service, but it is an obligation to your job. If you do not provide key customer service even when someone accidentally transfers a customer to your phone, then you are simply not earning the money you are being paid.

Why this topic? Because it matters, that's why. If a customer is transferred 3 times before someone can help them, then it's not a small problem... it suddenly become a company wide problem. Customers are our industry and they come first and without our customers we are nothing.

We are all customer service.

If someone calls and they need help, get them to the right place even if you have to run around the office asking people questions in order to figure out what the right place is. We value our customers and when we show them that we value them, they feel as important as they are.

And that matters! Keep Keeping Em Happy!

Does your attitude affect your job?

I come into work every day and I try to put on a smile and show that I am happy to be here. When I answer the phone I try to do it with a smile even if I am flustered, overwhelmed and the darn phone keeps interrupting me while I am trying to get my job done.

Some days are better than others, but do the bad days really affect your job? I think that the personality that you bring to the table at work highly affects not only the way your customers see you, but it also affects the way your fellow employees see you.

Attitude is a choice. You can come into work angry at everyone around you and full of a bad attitude, but in this economy I think that’s is the worst way to go if you want to secure your position at your job.

The reality is that you may not be happy in your job. You may not be making the amount that you want or perhaps you are just generally hacked off at the world around you. Your happiness or lack thereof is not going to change all by itself. It’s up to you to make the changes in your life to ensure your own happiness.

Don’t come storming into your place of work without remembering that others have to deal with your attitude. If you really love your job, remember your pleasantries and remember that your day could be worse… You could have gotten a flat tire this morning.

Attitude is key when it comes to a company that needs everyone within it providing the best customer service. Bring a good attitude to the plate and perhaps things will get better for you…. Otherwise a happier person may just take your job.

It’s an employer’s world now. Hang your problems outside the front door before you walk in… it’s not like they won’t be there when you leave again each day.

Cross Training, Does it really need to cost you more?

We all know that in any industry cross training is a key implement to establishing a safety net within your company, but does it really have to affect your pocketbook? I am not so sure that it does. Many employees would argue that they need additional time and energy for the training course(s) and this can be true in some cases, but how much is too much? Can cross training be done within business hours instead of racking up the overtime?

I think most corporations could argue that they have been left high and dry when it came to a lack of cross training. However... most would probably admit that they got through the crash course of training a lot quicker by having no choice but to "figure it out" themselves. Usually when this occurs, you or one of your employees are forced to learn and within a short amount of time that perhaps saved your company a day or two of overtime in training.

Is this really beneficial? Well I think it depends. If you jump into something and you do the best job that you possibly can and the company loses money due to a lack of understanding of how something is supposed to be done, well depending on the job... the mistake could be cheaper than an extra day of overtime. However this could also backfire and cost more than the overtime. Nevertheless, that employee would still be one step closer to doing that job in a time of need.

I think that beats everyone shrugging their shoulders and allowing things to sit on someones desk until they return. When you have employees that step up to the plate to get things done, it shows value and customer service. Paying a price to accomplish any task that must be done in the name of customer service is quite plainly the better way to go.

With that being said, do your best, try your best and hopefully in the end it will save your company a great deal and offer you more knowledge.

Does how you dress determine how good you are at your job?

You know it's amazing to me how much the corporate world has changed in the recent years. There was a time that suits and ties were what made you "a professional" in recent times this has changed for a lot of companies. Do you think the world is opening up to a more relaxed society? I think it is becoming more relaxed because people are actually coming to a point where they realize that it's okay to be who we are.

Since when did wearing a tie actually mean that you could do a better job than that of someone who choose to wear a polo shirt? Does your dress actually shape who you are? Does it shape how well you do business? Does it actually make you the best choice for the customer? If you walk into a building in a suit and tie, will you be treated differently than you would in casual dress? Would people sell more either way? How does the way you dress affect your business?

I honestly feel that people who are in "professional gear" for lack of a better word, feel more intimidating and a little too stiff. If I am looking for someone to do business with, do I want the guy who walks into my office with a stern personality, a face like stone, in a suit and tie and goes straight to talking about becoming my customer? I am the client here... This is my money we are talking about. I am not going to spend money on a company who doesn't understand my needs as a human for one and secondly my needs as a customer.

Now I am not talking about someone who walks into my office and hugs me either... as if we are old chums or something, but is there a happy medium? And if so... what draws that fine line between client and business partner?

I can tell you that if a human person walks into my office and first approaches me and asks me what my needs are instead of trying to shove a contract down my throat, he is going to get a lot further. Why is this? I personally think that your approach and attire affect your business, but was the professional world that we lived in for the "suit and tie" all wrong? Intimidation could actually work if a client were under pressure, but in this economy the people are learning that these corporate stern "suit and tie" people are not the boss of us.

It's interesting that now that we have the business that people so desperately want, in a broken down world... we are actually controlling not only the bang we get for our buck, but also the people we do business with. The corporate world is changing and I think it's for the better. People are finally becoming people and accepting people for who they are as humans. We no longer have to wear a mask or a suit and tie to impress clients because quite frankly they are going to choose whoever gives them confidence that the job will be handled in the appropriate way and not only that, but the way we want it handled. You may be the "professional" buddy, but your going to do this my way because I am the customer and your suit and tie isn't going to ensure that you're going to get my business.

So I guess you can say that now we are in a world where showing ourselves for who we really are can actually amount to something. So does a suit and tie really matter? Or is it how well you actually connect with your customers? Do you want real people with real knowledge leading your industry in a world where budgets are tight and people are looking to improve economy by helping the little man? I know that as a business partner and a customer... I want that.

This is a new world where if you dress uncomfortable the way you do business may feel fake or perhaps you feel uncomfortable to your client? Maybe the old school generation will appreciate you efforts to maintain a fine crease in your slacks, but I will take a normal person with a tan and a polo shirt any day.

We have been talking about blogging today and Scott and I have determined that there are probably a lot of people that don't know how to do it. It's interesting that this whole new world of technology has opened the worlds eyes to not only new connections within the corporate world, but also connections with long lost family and friends.

Some people are afraid to jump into this new technology world for a lack of understanding of how simple it really is. Do you have a personal blog? Does your company have a corporate blog? If so, do you really think that it will allow you to reach out to the world and actually make a new connection that you probably wouldn't have had otherwise? I personally think so.

After nine years a personal friend of mine actually found me on Facebook. I probably would have lost her forever without this new world that allows you to search for people. Some people that you don't necessarily want to find you may find you. How can you balance these things? It's an interesting topic of conversation and some of these past relationships weather personal or business related can truly open your eyes to how small the world actually is.

As I sit here and ponder these things I wonder if the whole world blogged, would we all find each other and get to know each other on a more personal level? Could this actually help to improve not only our personal lives, but our businesses as well? I think that if we could all work closer together then perhaps we can better learn how not to compete, but instead...share in opportunities. Would it allow the world to thrive if we all actually understood each other? It's a small world after all. There are likely some long lost friends out there for all of us.

Customer satisfaction with full-service moving companies is measured across five factors: shipping estimate process; packing services; loading and unloading service; transportation of belongings; and insurance/valuation coverage.

Mayflower Transit Ranks Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Full-Service Moving Companies
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.: 13 August 2009 - Overall customer satisfaction with full-service moving companies has improved in 2009 as customers report considerably fewer lost and damaged items, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2009 Full-Service Moving Company Customer Satisfaction StudySM released today.

The study, now in its third year, is based on evaluations from consumers in the United States who used a full-service moving company to move their household goods during the past 12 months. Customer satisfaction with full-service moving companies is measured across five factors: shipping estimate process; packing services; loading and unloading service; transportation of belongings; and insurance/valuation coverage.

Overall satisfaction with moving companies averages 804 on a 1,000-point scale in 2009-up 16 points from 2008. Satisfaction has increased from 2008 in all five factors measured in the study. In addition, the proportion of customers who report lost or damaged belongings has decreased to less than one-third in 2009, compared with nearly one-half in 2008.

"In the current economy, consumers may be tempted to pack and transport their belongings themselves; however using a full-service moving company to orchestrate and execute a move can be a smart economic decision and provide them with valuable peace of mind," said Michael Drago, director of the real estate and construction industries practice at J.D. Power and Associates. "Whether a move is completed independently or through a professional full-service moving company, there is a risk that items will be lost or damaged. Moving companies have reduced their lost and damaged items rates, but if any does occur, the customer is typically protected or insured to some extent through the moving company, which can help mitigate a problematic move."

Mayflower Transit improves substantially from 2008 to rank highest in 2009 with a score of 831. Mayflower Transit performs particularly well in all five factors. Allied Van Lines follows in the rankings with a score of 812.

Shipping estimates are a key consideration for customers selecting a moving company. The estimate process is typically completed in one of three ways-in-person by a representative of the moving company; over the phone; or online. The study finds that satisfaction with shipping estimates is nearly equal among customers whose estimates are completed in-person and online-averaging 807 and 805, respectively. However, shipping estimate satisfaction among customers who receive their initial quote over the phone averages 12 to 14 points lower than that of customers whose estimates were completed using either of the other two methods.

"Savvy customers recognize that the initial quote process provides more than just a price point to use in differentiating among the moving companies under consideration," said Drago. "The process offers insight into what it will be like to work with each company, as well as how accommodating, comprehensive and proactive they are. The price that is quoted is important, but the process is equally as revealing."

The study results also include the following key findings:
Among customers who experienced loss or damage to their belongings, only one-half filed a claim with their moving company. Among those customers who experienced loss or damage to their property and did not file claims, 60 percent reported that the items damaged or lost were not valuable enough to be worth filing a claim.

On average, there is a 59-day window between the day when a customer decides they are moving and the day their possessions are loaded onto a moving truck.
The percentage of customers who used a moving company to pack their belongings has decreased by 10 percentage points from 2008 to 44 percent in 2009.

The 2009 Full-Service Moving Company Customer Satisfaction Study is based on responses from nearly 1,500 customers who used a full-service moving company during the past 12 months. The study was fielded between April and June 2009.
